What comes to mind when you see the word “self-care?” Do you automatically relate it to skincare? Do you think of Instagram beauty hacks? Well, you’re not wrong. After all, taking care of your physical appearance is one good way to practice self-care—especially if you genuinely believe good skin improves confidence, self-worth and emotional well-being.

But what if you didn’t feel better even after making yourself look better? If skincare didn’t work, how would you practice self-care then?

Step 1: Put your phone in airplane mode

More than a year into remote work, you probably still get confused about when to stop working. You get too caught up in finishing your deliverables that you always end up losing track of time. But here’s a solution: Set an alarm that reminds you to put your phone in airplane mode. Ideal starting time should be between 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., but it still depends on your work schedule.

Disabling people from contacting you for a couple of hours every night is not being rude—not when a digital detox will help you realign with your core. Look at it this way: Putting your phone in airplane mode is like finally being able to kick off your shoes and remove your socks after a tiring day at work. It’s making time for yourself and ultimately putting yourself first. 

Step 2: Light a few candles (or dim the lights)

Researchers claim that when the light-sensitive cells in your retinas detect darkness, they will immediately signal your brain to sleep. Yup, lighting stimulates sleep.
