Going to the movies was some sort of an escape—at least for me. For an hour or two, I’d just sit in the theater and immerse myself in a story. I loved how the surround sound would drown my not-so-pretty thoughts.
But the lockdown scuttled all that, and now I’m just tired of sitting and watching movies alone in my room.
So I had a lightbulb moment and decided to plan a backyard movie night with my family on Christmas night (fingers crossed, I hope it won’t rain). Yup, we’d opt to stay in because safety should always be a priority.
Now if you want to set one up for your family or friends, I’ve made a checklist of the things you’ll need. Sure, it can’t provide the full experience an actual movie house can, but I suppose it’s better than watching a movie on the tiny screen of your phone—alone.
Home theater projector
With a projector, you can watch films on any plain surface. You can even adjust the screen size to your liking. Acer X123PH supports a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 in a 16:10 aspect ratio with high contrast and brightness of up to 3,000 lumens.
Besides the fact that it produces bigger pictures than a regular TV, it’s also less straining to the eyes as it only reflects light on the screen—thus, less blue light.
Ideally, you would also need a projector screen for a backyard movie night. But if you don’t want to spend money, this one can go. You can just make your own projector screen with a thick, white blanket and tack it on a solid surface. You can check other alternatives, too.
Sound helps set the overall mood of the film (unless you’re watching a Charlie Chaplin silent film from the 1920s). And it wouldn’t be a complete movie night experience if the sound effects don’t vibrate through your chest. So it might be best to invest in a speaker system with double-bass power such as the SonicGear Morro 2200. It has high-performance bass audio—perfect for action, horror, mystery and fantasy films.
You’ve probably experienced watching an intense scene when your laptop suddenly freezes in the middle of it all. Frustrating, right? So of course, you’ll need a laptop that won’t let you down. Acer Swift 3 has 1TB HDD which can store approximately 500 hours of full-length films without lagging. And oh, it’s compatible with projectors! (P.S. Download films on legal sites.)
Don’t forget to prep some water-resistant blankets and pillows or air mattress, snacks, drinks and decorations of your preference. Fairy lights make the best movie night decor though, just saying.
Hopefully, I’ll see you at the cinema at the end of this pandemic. But let’s settle for movie nights at home for now.
If you’re really after a new cinematic experience, there are drive-in theaters popping up (SM Cinema Drive-In Mall of Asia Concert Grounds says hi) which allows you to watch the film from the safety of your vehicle.
