A foolproof guide to this year’s denim looks, as told by stylist Daryl Chang
Emblematic of quotidian style, denim is a staple piece in everyone’s closet. Stylist and fashion consultant Daryl Chang rounds up the best ways to raise your denim game.
1. A staple for all seasons

Recent runway shows display iterations of past cuts and silhouettes. Whether high-waisted, flared, skinny, ripped, or tapered, the key is getting the perfect wash and fit. The laidback style of these simple cuffed jeans from Topshop makes it easy to pair with anything.
2. All about the wash

Denim styling is not limited to dark or light wash only, as we’ve seen how this fabric continues to be reinterpreted in runway shows: updated with patch work, embroidered, printed, and many more. “Finishes are in the extremes [this year]. Raw and dark denim was everywhere on the Spring/Summer 2018 runways and so were extremely washed out blues,” Daryl notes.
3. Match made in heaven

Denim on denim was a notorious fashion faux pas when Britney and Justin did it together in 2001, but times and tastes have changed. How to update the look? “Play with contrasts: a lighter-washed jacket on top and a darker denim on the bottom,” says Daryl. Some foolproof fashion math: a belted denim jacket paired with skinny or flare jeans; a dark-washed oversized jacket with light-washed skinnies; a tailor-fit tucker jacket with a matching pencil skirt.
4. Smart tailoring

Denim is as versatile as it is consistent. Take pieces from day to night by pairing jeans with neutral colored pieces. A suit and trouser combo is an easy way to elevate a look, while dressing down is so much easier, “Just pull on your favorite jeans and match it with your equally favorite t-shirt and sneakers.”
