This year is our year—or at least, that’s what we promise ourselves as we welcome 2019 with brand new resolutions. A clean slate is ahead of us: We still have 11 months to take better care of ourselves, especially after all the problems we left behind in 2018. However, as we embark on the next phase of our self-care journey, it’s also important that we check our definition of self-care, since it has become an umbrella buzzword for many misconceptions.
For one, it’s wrongly believed to be interchangeable with self-pampering, as American psychologist Christine
Meinecke has observed. Self-pampering often leads to self-indulgence, which, according to her 2010 study, is “characterized by avoidance of the effortful and substitution of quick and easy antidotes.” And some of these “antidotes,” such as overfeeding ourselves, sleeping in for hours, and procrastinating, only add stress and cause us sickness.
In short, most have reduced self-care into a band-aid solution for much larger issues, when it should be just as simple as letting creativity flow. As Meinecke stressed, proper self-care means choosing behaviors that balance the effects of our emotional and physical problems. One such behavior is finding creative outlets: Expressing ourselves creatively helps us have a more positive outlook in life. Even when we get exhausted from engaging in activities we’re passionate about, we don’t feel depleted.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.19.13″ src=”https://www.smshopmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Remedy.jpg” /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.13″]
Here are five healthy ways you can express your love for yourself this year:[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.13″]
Engage in music
Music has long been known as a key in dealing with anxiety and stress. You may not notice it, but listening to your favorite tunes calms your nerves and boosts your energy, especially if you play them at the start of your day. So put on your favorite playlist and let yourself enjoy the rhythm.
Leaf through your reads
Pick up a book from your shelf or your favorite bookstore and take time to immerse yourself in the world within its pages. Reading enriches your thoughts, and there are many self-help reads available that can enlighten you on how to combat stress.
Go forth and sightsee
Traveling shouldn’t be seen as an indulgence but rather as a healthy habit. Researchers have discovered that being exposed to different places and cultures improves stress levels in lasting ways. Plus, the planning process gives you something to work on and look forward to. Go book yourself a flight to an exciting place—like the Holy Land, perhaps?
Get into shape
Self-care is not about slacking off. It’s about pushing yourself to become better in all aspects, which is why you should exercise regularly. With the right clothes, equipment, and perseverance, you’ll find yourself confident and strong in no time.
Capture the moments
Photography is a good outlet for communicating feelings and helps people be more mindful and positive. Also, you would want something to look back on as you embrace a healthier and more creative lifestyle.
