Letting go is never easy. We all may have found ourselves down on the floor, an hour into a closet purge, and shamelessly holding onto a dress that we got on sale five years ago and never wore once. Maybe it’s not just our closets, it could be or kitchen, or cupboards, or even bookshelves. The bottom line is that it’s hard to let go. But at some point, we have to face the music … are we nostalgic? Or are we just hoarders?
Thankfully, esteemed author and celebrated professional organizer, Marie Kondo and her #1 New York Times Best Selling Book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up is here to bring back joy into our cluttered lives.
Let’s start with something easy – and leave the rest to the book. Set aside a few minutes or hours in a day for the next seven days for this easy to follow tidying technique from KonMari.
Day 1 – Closet Case
The purge begins from what would probably be the most cluttered part of your home, the closet. Take everything out and have them in a pile. Sort through each piece one by one, and ask yourself if this item is bringing joy into your life. Not nostalgia, but joy. If it does not, then throw it out.
Once done thinning out your wardrobe, try to organize your clothes by folding them and neatly stack them vertically in a drawer. This allows all items to be visible and orderly.
Day 2 – Good Bye Old Make Up
Yes, you read that right. Take some time to go through your vanity and bathroom, and see what toiletries and make up you can let go of. Two-year-old lipstick, expired vitamins, or even the shampoo you got from that hotel room. Honestly, keeping non-essentials in your medicine cabinet can just lead to bad make up decisions and a collection of expired soap and shampoo.
Day 3 – Make Space for the Essentials
Marie Kondo believes in keeping a drawer, where she can store her daily essentials, by her entryway (or doorway).
A tidied entryway makes leaving and coming home a joy. Assess your foyer and see if you’ve bombarded it with old mail or magazines that has never made it to the shelves. If so, tidy it up and leave only what you need, like your everyday jacket, umbrella, keys, or wallet.
Day 4 – A Breathable Workspace
Take a moment and look at your desk or office space. Are you holding onto paid billing statements? Are there receipts and piles of old documents? Is that book taking up space that it shouldn’t be? If you’ve answered yes to any of those questions, then it’s time to bring in the trash bag and let the clutter go.
Yes, even the books that we hold on to so dearly can find joy in a new home. If that novel from high school is only catching dust, then think about donating or giving it to a friend.
Day 5 – Make your Living Space Livable Again
Your living space should be a joy to be in.
This one is simple. Throw out old newspapers, magazines, and even outdated technology that you do not use, and make room for you. No one needs to see that old boom box, or the cassette player you listened nursery rhymes with. It’s time to let them go.
Day 6 – Organize Your Cupboard and Kitchen
This one should be a no-brainer. Though we all grew up with mothers that held onto plastic containers like they were blocks of gold, it’s time to just keep what we need. Give away that casserole dish that you know you’d never bake with, or fill up that old container with freshly baked cookies and tell your neighbor to keep it. Find ways to give away old kitchenware that you know would be utilized in a different home, and remember to say no the next time you get an itch to buy something you don’t need.
Aside from old wire whisks and yellow plastic boxes, take a look at your cupboard and refrigerator. Check the labels and see if everything is still well into their expiration date. If not, toss them out. Rearrange those that are still okay and keep the ones that are closer to expiring up front so you’d be able to consume them first.
Day 7 – You Revel in Your Tidy Home
You’ve done well and you deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Take a long bath in your clean bathroom, and take a nap in your de-cluttered living space. Your home is now a KonMari convert and you’ve earned to rest.
